 <title> Tyre labelling: helping consumers make an informed choice</title>

From November 2012 all new tyres on sale in Europe will be classified and labelled for fuel efficiency, wet grip and noise performance, as a result of new rules agreed by MEPs today. The labelling will be similar to that required for household appliances and potential buyers will be able to compare tyre characteristics before making a purchase.&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

 <title>Green light for new EU telecoms rules</title>

&lt;b&gt;The European Parliament today approved a major overhaul of EU telecoms rules designed to strengthen the rights of phone and internet users, while boosting competition between telecoms firms. The new rules will need to be implemented in national legislation by 24 May 2011 (see timeline below for details).&lt;/b&gt;

 <title>Sakharov Prize 2009 awarded to Memorial</title>

&lt;b&gt;The European Parliament&#039;s 2009 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought has been awarded to Russian civil rights defence organization Memorial.  The winner was announced by European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek in Strasbourg on 22 October. The award ceremony will take place in Strasbourg on 16 December.&lt;/b&gt;

 <title>MEPs approve Barroso as Commission President</title>

 <description>The European Parliament has approved the appointment of &lt;b&gt;José Manuel Barroso as President of the European Commission&lt;/b&gt;, It will be Mr Barroso&#039;s second five-year term as Commission President.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Mr Barroso was elected by 382 votes in favour, 219 against and 117 abstentions in a vote held by secret ballot on Wednesday. The approval required a simple majority of the votes cast as the vote took place under the rules of the Nice Treaty. Abstentions did not count.&lt;br /&gt;

 <title>UK winners of the EP prize for journalism go forward</title>

&lt;b&gt;The UK nominations for the European Parliament Prize for Journalism have been selected and will now go forward to compete for the overall €5,000 prizes against entries from other EU Member States. The UK winner in the internet category was Mark Mardell for his blog on the BBC website; and in the written press category, Justin Stares, for his piece in Lloyd&#039;s List shipping newspaper on the impact of EU laws on the shipbreaking industry across the globe.&lt;/b&gt; 
&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The UK judging panel did not make any nominations in the TV or radio categories.

 <description>With the recent European Parliament elections on 4 June, and the news on expenses of Westminster MPs, attention is now being given to MEPs’ expenses.

Following a long campaign, a common salary for all MEPs was finally agreed on, by all EU governments and by the European Parliament, to start immediately following this year’s election. Henceforward MEPs will be paid a common salary of € 7,665 a month (ca. €92,000) before tax.
