This workshop, organised by the Sussex European Institute (SEI), has three aims. Primarily, it will focus on qualitative research approaches to studying the European Parliament: participants will discuss how to fill the gaps left by quantitative methods and the potential of qualitative methods for providing knowledge and explanations of phenomena at the EP. The workshop will also address challenges such as validity and reliability of qualitative approaches. Secondly the workshop will allow young scholars to network with each other and established scholars in the field and share their research experiences and advice. Thirdly, it will provide an opportunity to discuss research planning and design issues, particularly gaining access to EU institutions as professionals.
MEPs and media representatives will also share their perspectives on the EP along with the academics. Confirmed speakers so far include Berthold Rittberger, Anne Rasmussen, Richard Whitaker, and Richard Ashworth MEP.
Fees for attendees are £30, £20 for UACES members and £5 for graduate students.
There are a limited number of £45 travel bursaries available for students. To express an interest in attending, please email Tim Bale.
