The Week Ahead

The European Parliament continues its series of hearings of European Commissioner candidates from 4-8 October.
  • Peter Mandelson will appear before the International Trade Committee of the Parliament on Monday 4 October from 12noon to 3pm UK time
  • 11 other hearings will take place (for full programme of the week visit our website www.europarl.org.uk )
  • For reports on the hearings that have taken place from 27 September to 1 October, visit the hearings website.
  • On the basis of these hearings, the European Parliament as a whole will vote on whether to approve the proposed team of Commissioners at its session in Strasbourg from 25-28 October.
Those committees not involved with hearings will meet in normal session. Among the highlights are :-
  • David Bostock, European Court of Auditors, will discuss irregular payments under the Common Agricultural Policy (Budgetary Control Committee - Tuesday)
  • Richard Corbett MEP (Labour, Yorkshire & Humber) will jointly lead discussion of the European Constitutional Treaty in Constitutional Affairs Committee (Tuesday)
  • Peter Skinner MEP (Labour, South East) will introduce 1st reading discussion of the proposed new directive on reinsurance.
  • Company relocations and outsourcing is the subject of research findings to be presented by the European Monitoring Centre on Change to Employment & Social Affairs Cttee (Wednesday)
  • Foreign Affairs Committee will draw up the shortlist of candidates for the annual Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought.
