The Week Ahead

Committee meetings

MEPs return to Brussels for their last full week of meetings in committee before the elections in June. Among the highlights of the week:-
  • Commissioner Chris Patten will appear before the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Budgets Committee
  • Commissioner Neil Kinnock is down to attend the Budgets Committee to discuss reform of the Commission (tbc)
  • Chemicals:- The REACH proposals get another airing in Environment Committee
  • Healthy food labelling:- further discussion in Environment Committee and possibly 1st reading adoption
  • Safety at Sea:- Temporary Committee adopts its final report
Among the main issues being led by UK MEPs:-
  • Diana Wallis MEP: adoption of report on cross-border co-operation in civil & commercial law (Legal Affairs Cttee)
  • Giles Chichester MEP:- Discussion of his 1st reading report on security of electricity supplies (Industry Cttee)
  • Jean Lambert MEP:- adoption of her 2nd reading report on co-ordination of social security systems (Employment Cttee)
  • Robert Sturdy MEP:- adoption of his 1st reading report on pesiticide residue levels (Environment Cttee)
  • Christopher Beazley MEP will introduce a public hearing on "the European dimension in history teaching" (Culture Cttee).
