Seminar for journalists

Towards the 2009 European elections

Information actions for journalists
March 4-5, Brussels

When the European Parliament celebrates its 50 years, it is also the time to look ahead. How can the European Parliament of the future influence the life of citizens? What are the competences of Parliament? Journalists are invited to take part in a briefing with officials and Members of the European Parliament on the implications of the Treaty of Lisbon for the European Parliament, which should be in force when citizens go to the ballots in June 2009. This briefing will take place on the afternoon of 4 March. The following day, journalists have the possibility of attending a Conference which will deal with factors influencing the participation in elections. Results of a special 2007 Eurobarometer will be presented.

Tuesday 4 March 2008

The Treaty of Lisbon: implications for the 2009 elections to the European Parliament

Briefing for journalists

50 years of Parliament: what future for the EU with the new Treaty?
Introduction by José Luis Pacheco, EP official of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs

Exchange of views with MEPs: political implications of the Lisbon Treaty

  • Richard CORBETT (PSE, UK) - rapporteur
  • Íñigo MÉNDEZ DE VIGO (EPP-ED, ES) - rapporteur

The report on the Lisbon Treaty was adopted by the European Parliament by 525 votes in favour, 115 against and 29 abstentions.

Wednesday 5 March 2008

Conference "People and Parliament in the European Union in the context of the 2009 elections"

Journalists have the opportunity to follow up this conference with experts which examine different aspects that have an impact on electoral participation. Does gender, age, class or disability have an impact on turn out? How do parties and media influence participation? These are some of the questions that will be discussed, aiming to find answers to the paradox that while the European Parliament powers increase, participation of citizens in the European elections decreases. Results of a special 2007 Eurobarometer on how citizens perceive the role, image and functioning of the European Parliament, will be presented.

Journalists will also have the opportunity of posing questions.
