The Week Ahead 7-11 January 2008

Slovenia took over the Presidency of the EU on 1 January 2008.  This year is the EU Year of Inter-cultural Dialogue

MEPs return to Brussels from 7 January for a week of meetings preparing their political group positions ahead of the following week's plenary session in Strasbourg.  Highlights of that session are likely to include:

  • Consumer Credit Directive 2nd reading
  • Airport charges 1st reading
  • Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from fuels - 1st reading
  • Presentation on Slovenian Presidency programme
  • East Midlands Labour MEP Glenis Willmott report on health & safety strategy

 

The European Parliament on your radar

Among the main reports due for adoption in the European Parliament over the coming months (timing is subject to change): 
  • Postal Services Directive - 2nd reading - January Brussels
  • Revision of Timeshare Directive - 1st reading - April/May
  • Illegal immigration - system for return of illegals; sanctions against employers - May
  • Electricity and gas internal markets - 1st reading - June

Among the non-legislative reports due for adoption in the coming months: 
  • Nutrition and obesity (Environment/Public Health Committee vote March)
  • Animal health strategy (Agriculture Committee vote April)
  • Prostitution and health (Women's Rights Committee vote May)

 

UK MEPs will be leading on a number of reports in early 2008, including: 
  • North East Liberal Democrat MEP Fiona Hall on energy efficiency (January Brussels)
  • Northern Ireland Sinn Fein MEP Bairbre de Brún on Northern Ireland PEACE Programme (February)
  • Yorks & Humber Labour MEP Richard Corbett on EU Reform Treaty (February)
  • West Midlands Labour MEP Neena Gill on quality of life for older people (March)
  • West Midlands Liberal Democrat MEP Liz Lynne on Equal opportunities and discrimination (April/May)
  • Welsh Labour MEP Eluned Morgan on electricity markets (June)
  • South East Labour MEP Peter Skinner on Solvency II Directive (July/September)
  • South West Labour MEP Glyn Ford on trade with ASEAN countries (no timing)
