Freedom of Expression and the Development of Parliamentary Democracy in the Euro-Mediterranean Region

Thursday, 23 June 2005, 3-6.30pm
European Parliament, Brussels

The main objective of this special joint hearing is to analyse the state of freedom of expression and parliamentary democracy in the Mediterranean countries.

The political context is provided by this year's 10th anniversary of the Barcelona process, a process of associating the countries of the Mediterranean region with the EU which focuses on political, economic and social modernisation.

This hearing is also a follow-up to discussions held at the first Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly in Cairo in March 2005, where the President of the European Parliament initiated the idea for this hearing.
