Member States have to adopt laws to comply with it by 3 October 2008 and these have to come into effect by 3 April 2009.

The ban on use of mercury in new barometers would take effect in 2010, and 6 months sooner for other instruments such as fever thermometers.

Implementation in the UK will be overseen by DEFRA.

The Controls on Dangerous Substances and Preparations (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations 2007 came into force in the UK on 31st December 2007.

A full regulatory impact assessment of the effect that this instrument will have on the costs of business and the voluntary sector, and a transposition note, are available from the Chemicals and Nanotechnology Division, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Nobel House, 17 Smith Square, London SW1P 3JR and at www.defra.gov.uk.
