Two Regulations (1829/2003 and 1830/2003) on labelling of genetically modified food and feed have been approved and were published in the Official Journal on 18 October 2003.

The European Parliament has equal decision-making power with the Council of Ministers in the area of food safety and food labelling. In the area of GM crop authorisations and "GM-free" zones, it is the European Commission which issues guidelines.
