Tackling Gender-Based Violence Across Europe
Join the European Parliamentary Liaison Office and the Young European Movement for a female-led round table discussion on the state of equality in Europe, specifically tackling gender-based violence. Participants will have the chance to hear expert insight especially relating to the new EU Directive on combating violence against women and girls and put forwards their views on what concrete collaborative steps can be taken to improve the plight of women across Europe.
Speakers
Frances Fitzgerald is a Member of European Parliament, a member of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality and the EU's chief negotiator on legislation regarding violence against women and former Irish Deputy Prime Minister from 2016-17, one of only four women to have ever held this position. Prior to her election to the Dáil, Frances was Chair of the National Women’s Council of Ireland and Vice-President of the European Women’s Lobby. She was also a founding member of the Women’s Environment Network.
Ellen O’ Malley Dunlop is the Chairperson of the National Women’s Council of Ireland and former CEO of Ireland’s Rape Crisis Centre. She has written for a range of newspapers on the subject of femicide including the Independent Ireland and remains a staunch advocate for gender equality.
Moderator Cecilia Jastrzembska, Head of Events & National Coordination with YEM UK, Director, UK Government, National Executive member of the Young Fabians and Control Commission member for the Young European Socialists. Cecilia was one of two UK delegates chosen to participate in the British South Asian Youth Summit on VAWG spanning 9 countries and regularly does speaking engagements on women's rights, the environment and AI, including addressing the UN and the International Human Rights Commission. Last year, she launched her pamphlet 'Rebuilding The World For Women' in Parliament and frequently writes for political publications including Europinion, the Oxford Political Review, Policy Network, Backbench UK among others.
