EP libraries - Luxembourg library made 459 book loans last year at a cost of £2,138 per book; Brussels library had book loans @ £1,379 per book. (Bumper Book of Government Waste, 2006)
The European Parliament libraries are a hive of research activity, with researchers, MEP assistants and committee staff regularly consulting documents there and raising enquiries with the library staff on behalf of members. They do not function like a local lending library, but more like a reference library - to take the total library costs and simply divide by number of books on loan is a ridiculous way to estimate the costs of running a library and research service. |
