Review of the Balance of Competences

On the 12th July 2012, the Foreign Secretary announced a review of the balance of competences. This, he said, was intended to guide and inform debate about the European Union for years to come. It is clear that the result of the review and whatever decisions are taken on it will have far-reaching consequences for business and civil society stakeholders. So it is of crucial importance that the preparation and presentation of their evidence must be effective. As a starting point of this process, this event was held. It consisted of:
- A detailed explanation of the review process by FCO experts who will also answer practical questions from the audience.
- A panel debate to discuss the exercise and the political environment in which it is being held. First reactions from important stakeholders were also heard.
Panel discussion were moderated by David Seymour (former political editor, Mirror Group, currently consultant editor to Nucleus). The panel included Baroness Sarah Ludford (MEP, ALDE), Mr Sajjad Karim (MEP, ECR), Phillip Souta (Business for New Europe).
