This week at the European Parliament - 8th-14th September 2014

05/09/2014

MEPs return to Brussels on 5th September for committee meetings.

To do the preparatory work for Parliament’s sessions MEPs meet in specialised standing committees each with 24 to 76 MEPs. The political make-up of committees reflects that of the Parliament. They draw up, amend and adopt legislative proposals and own-initiative reports.  They also consider Commission and Council proposals and draw up reports to be presented to the plenary assembly.

Committee Highlights

Ukraine
MEPs from the Committee on Foreign Affairs will discuss and vote on plans to fast track ratification of the EU-Ukraine association agreement. The situation in Ukraine will also be discussed with NATO and EEAS representatives in the Sub-Committee on Security and Defence. EP President Martin Schulz will travel to Ukraine, meeting Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk on Thursday and President Petro Poroshenko, with whom he will also open the Yalta European Strategy Conference in Kiev, on Friday. (Monday, Thursday, Friday)

Egypt
Committee on Foreign Affairs MEPs will meet Dr Shawqy Ibrahim Abdul Kareem Allam, the Grand Mufti of Egypt, to discuss current affairs there. (Monday)

Gaza children
The Sub-Committee on Human Rights MEPs will hold a hearing on the plight of children in Gaza, with the participation of Israeli activist and 2011 Sakharov Prize laureate Professor Nurit Peled. (Thursday)

Plenary preparations
Political groups will prepare for the 15-18 September plenary session in Strasbourg, where the Parliament is due to ratify the EU-Ukraine association agreement and possibly discuss the latest developments in relations with Russia, and crises in Gaza, Syria and Iraq. The Council will present its position on the draft general budget for financial 2015. MEPs will also probably vote on applications to mobilise the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund in Greece, Romania, Spain and The Netherlands.

The President's agenda
On Tuesday President Schulz will meet UN Special Envoy on Climate Change Mary Robinson.
