This week at the European Parliament - 1st-5th September 2014

MEPs return to Brussels on 1st September for committee meetings.

To do the preparatory work for Parliament’s sessions MEPs meet in specialised standing committees each with 24 to 76 MEPs. The political make-up of committees reflects that of the Parliament. They draw up, amend and adopt legislative proposals and own-initiative reports.  They also consider Commission and Council proposals and draw up reports to be presented to the plenary assembly.

Committee Highlights

Crises in the EU neighbourhood
Committee on Foreign Affairs MEPs will discuss the recent developments in Syria, Iraq, Libya, Gaza, and Ukraine. (Tuesday)

EU-Russia Trade
MEPs from the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development will quiz the Commission on next steps in light of Russian import ban of EU food. Relations with Russia will also be discussed by members of the International Trade Committee. (Wednesday and Thursday)

Ebola outbreak
Commissioners Borg and Georgieva will appear respectively before the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and the Committee on Development to discuss the on-going Ebola crisis in West Africa. (Wednesday)

Economic Dialogue
Low economic growth and deflation risks in the Eurozone will be the focus of discussion between MEPs from the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and Mr Jeroen Dijsselbloem, President of the Eurogroup. (Thursday)


Other issues:

Italian Presidency
Italian ministers will set out and discuss the different aspects of the current Presidency programme with MEPs in the committees concerned. (Tuesday-Wednesday)

The President's agenda
On Saturday, 30 August, President Schulz will address the European Council, on behalf of the European Parliament. The President will meet Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. (Monday)

Press briefing
The EP Press Service will hold a press briefing on week's activities at 11.00 on Monday. (EP Press conference room, Brussels)
