MEPs return to Brussels on 23 September  for a full week of committee meetings.

 

Committee highlights:

Banking Union/Draghi.
MEPs in the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs will debate monetary affairs, economic governance and banking union, notably the EU recovery and resolution system for troubled banks, with ECB President Mario Draghi. (Monday)

European Stability Mechanism.
The Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs will debate the work of the European Stability Mechanism with its Managing Director Klaus Regling. A press point will be held after the meeting. (Tuesday)

Medical devices.
Reacting to the PIP breast implant and "metal on metal" hip implant scandals, the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety will vote on legislation to ensure that member states apply existing EU safety rules consistently, to beef up certifying bodies, and to centralise authorisation procedures for certain devices. (Postponed from last week - Wednesday)

In-vitro medical devices.
New rules to enhance safety, include new products and set clear authorisation criteria for in-vitro medical devices (IVD) will be voted by the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. IVDs are used for diagnostics outside the human body, such as self-tests for blood sugar levels, HIV and DNA tests. (Postponed from last week - Wednesday)


Reform of EU agricultural policy.
EP and Council negotiating teams will try once more to agree on the remaining Common Agricultural Policy reform issues, e.g. degressivity of direct payments, the transfer of funds and co-financing, before the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development takes its first reading vote on Monday 30 September, to be confirmed by plenary. (Tuesday)


NSA surveillance.
The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs will hold the third in a series of hearings on issues to do with US surveillance in the EU. This time, MEPs will look into allegations that the NSA tapped into the SWIFT data base and hear representatives of the US administration. (Tuesday)
