MEPs return to Brussels on 2 September for committee meetings and political group meetings in preparation for the Strasbourg plenary from 9-12 September.

 

Highlights:

NSA Surveillance.
The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs will hold the first of a series of hearings examining issues around US surveillance in the EU. MEPs will hear from journalists involved in the revelation of widespread surveillance, among others. (Thursday)


EU economy.
Eurogroup President Jeroen Dijsselbloem will discuss latest developments in the Eurozone with members of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs. The next steps for Greece are likely to feature prominently. (Thursday)


Jobs and social inclusion.
A deal for a new EU programme to support the creation of jobs, facilitate worker mobility and combat social exclusion - set to run from 2014-2020 - will be put to the vote in the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs, following successful negotiations with member states in July. (Thursday)


Public procurement.
MEPs from the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection are set to endorse the agreements reached with member states on new EU rules on public procurement and concession contracts to make public spending more efficient and strategic. The water sector will be exempt from the new concession rules. (Thursday)


Cultural support programmes.
The Committee on Culture and Education will decide on "Creative Europe", a new multiannual programme 2014-2020 which brings together the current MEDIA, Culture and MEDIA Mundus programmes. An informal agreement was reached with member states in July. (Thursday)


Flood relief.
The Committee on Budgets will vote on European Solidarity Fund assistance to Slovenia, Croatia and Austria following floods in late 2012. (Thursday)

Plenary preparation
Political groups will prepare for the 9-12 September plenary session in Strasbourg, which will feature the annual State of the Union debate and is slated to include votes on the MFF, the European banking authority, the tobacco directive, biofuels and mortgages.

President Schulz will attend the Conference of Speakers of the G8 countries in London on Friday and Saturday.
