MEPs return to Brussels on 7 January for the first committee meetings, and political group meetings in preparation for the first plenary session of 2013 in Strasbourg from 14-17 January.

Juncker
Eurozone chief Jean-Claude Juncker meets Members of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs to discuss the new provisions for economic dialogues between the EP and individual member states that will allow the EP to help hold national governments to account when they break EU rules. (Thursday)

Ashton on EEAS accounts
EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton answers questions from the Committee on Budgetary Control on the European External Action Service's accounts for 2011, as part of Parliament's scrutiny of the implementation of the EU budget. Karel Pinxtena, a member of the European Court of Auditors, will be present. (Thursday)

Visas
The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs votes on a safeguard clause to allow the EU to re-introduce visa requirements temporarily if faced with a sudden and major increase in irregular migrants or unfounded asylum applications by non-EU nationals. This amendment to the EU visa-free regime recently agreed by the EP and Council was requested by several member states facing a spike in asylum requests after visas were waived for the Western Balkans. (Thursday) (TBC)

Plenary preparation
Parliament's political groups will prepare for the plenary session in Strasbourg from (14-17 January), where the House will vote on a range of economic and monetary issues, including banking supervision, the capital requirements directive (CRD IV), rating agencies and stability bonds. The agenda also includes minimum standards for processing applications for asylum and a partnership agreement with Iraq and a debate on the outgoing Cyprus presidency and expectations for the incoming Irish one.
