MEPs return to Brussels on Monday 9 January. Election and re-election of chairmen and vice-chairmen of the committees will take place during the constituent committee meetings beginning Monday 23 January.

Highlights include:

European Year of Citizens 2013 and nuclear concerns take centre-stage in January
On 12.01.12 at 09.00, the Committee on Petitions will be officially introduced to the proposals of the Commission for "European Year of Citizens 2013". Other issues on the Agenda are: concerns about nuclear power in France, Finland, Spain and Estonia; and a debate on the Draft report on EU Citizenship.

Exchange of views with Commissioner Piebalgs
In the context of the 2010 discharge procedure the Committee on Budgetary Control will hold an exchange of views on 12.01.12, on the implementation of development aid provided by the EU-budget and the European Development Fund, with Commissioner Andris Piebalgs, responsible for Development.

Debate on customs, professional qualifications and technical harmonisation
Members of the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection will debate the customs enforcement of intellectual property rights (Jürgen CREUTZMANN (ALDE, DE)). The legislative proposals and the relevant impact assessment on the modernisation of the professional qualifications directive (S&D) and  the 9 technical harmonisation directives will be presented by the Commission and discussed (Zuzana ROITHOVÁ (EPP, CZ)). The meeting will take place on 09.01.12 from 15.00 - 18.30 in room JAN 4Q2.

Discussion of EU-Belarus relations
On 12.01.12 the Committee on Foreign Affairs will host an exchange of views on EU-Belarus relations since the presidential elections of 19 December 2010. Members will discuss current EU policy towards Belarus and its impact on Belarusian authorities and on ordinary citizens.
